THORPE UNITED AFC, Thorpe Willoughby Sports Association, Field Lane, Thorpe Willoughby, Selby, North Yorkshire, YO8 9FL
COMPETITION :  York Leeper Hare ~ Reserve League A
DATE :                 Saturday 16th February 2008

RESULT :
Kartiers Reserves   3 – 3   Thorpe United Reserves
Goalscorers:     Chapman, Squires, Kernaghan

In the first of three meeting in seven weeks, with youth against experience in this York Leeper Hare Reserve A derby game, the outcome was a hard earned 3 – 3 draw. Sporting no less than six U17’s, due to first team call-ups and injuries, Thorpe showed true character and determination to not only take their chances, and lead the game for over seventy minutes, but to push some experienced premier level players to the very last minute.

In the first fifteen Kartiers controlled and showed the danger they could present, but Laverick in fine form, supported by centre backs Squires and Birch, kept out three good chances. Gaining confidence the youngsters began to push forward and pressure a nervous looking home defence, Midfielder Chapman bursting through to seize on an error and demonstrate a cool head, placing the ball passed the outstretched keeper.

Injuries to Martland and Pearse led to a re-shuffle with Gibbon and Kernaghan dropping to full backs, and introductions to wide men Walker and Heron, who provided the outlets for further classic counter attacking football. Sowden, Heron, and Coult, all benefiting but failing to finish. A subsequent Pickles thunderbolt corner, and a near post run opened Kartiers defense for Squires to loop a header over the keeper and give Thorpe a well earned second. Kartiers however managed to find their shooting boots, and despite holding onto a lead for over three quarters of the game, a tiring Thorpe team, dropping deeper, succumbed to the hosts as they failed to clear their lines allowing Kartiers to fire home two goals in quick succession.

With five minutes left the home team must have thought they had clinched the points after another ‘ping pong’ session of clearances failed to get outside the eighteen yard box and a strike was finished in style, this time Laverick beaten by the closeness and accuracy, giving the hosts the lead for the first time with 85minutes gone!

The youngsters of Thorpe, were far from finished and an inspired last minute thirty five yard strike from man of the match Kernaghan was enough to clinch a share of the points and a deserved result for an ever maturing team.
COMPETITION :   York Leeper Hare ~ Reserve League A
DATE :                   Saturday 12th April 2008
RESULT :
Thorpe United Reserves   3 – 1   Huntington Reserves
Goalscorers:       Clamp 2, Merry

Thorpe reserves carried out a double against this experienced York outfit, beating Huntington 3 -1, the same score line when they played in January.

First teamers, Clamp, Dickinson and Emmett were drafted into the squad to strengthen the youthful team, with no less than seven 17 year olds involved in the action. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Brown was instrumental in midfield, continually opening up play, setting up Clamp for two goals, after the home team conceded a soft goal from what appeared to be an offside position, a Huntington forward cashing in on a cross bar re-bound. Both Dickinson and Kernaghan both had chances to pull further away, however they failed to hit the target.

The second half turned into a feisty affair, with the visitors trying to unsettle the young guns, Laverack pulling off two first class saves from a dangerous corner. However Thorpe got the wind back in their sails, playing flowing football that should have killed off the game, providing Coult, Chapman, Kernaghan and Brown with further goal scoring chances, sub Merry though showed the way, scrambling the third, his seventh of the season, to move the team into third spot in the league, highlighting the impressive form the young guns are showing.
