Thorpe United FC are making huge strides towards developing a disability section with in their club set up. Richard Douglas (chairman) has been working in partnership with James Chapman (Sport & Physical Activity Inclusion Officer) to develop provision for a disability football team with in the Selby area.
Initially two disability football taster sessions have been held at Abbey Leisure Centre. Both sessions were well attended and feedback from players was very positive. Four more football taster sessions have been organised at Abbey Leisure Centre for adults with a disability on 25th October, 1st , 8th and 15th November all 2-3.30pm.
Richard Douglas (chairman of Thorpe United) commented ‘this is a fantastic opportunity for disabled people to develop their football skills, knowledge and ability in a club environment with qualified coaches.’ He then went on to say that ‘work has been on going for a number of years to develop a disability section with in Thorpe United Football Club, with the support of James Chapman in his role as Sport & Physical Activity Inclusion Officer things have developed rapidly and Thorpe United are now ready to lead the way in disability football in the Selby area.
Active 8 a Leeds based Sports equipment supplier who have strong business links with in the Selby sporting community will provide sponsorship for the team kit. Simon Brooker (managing director of Active 8) said ‘we are keen to get involved in grass roots based community projects, particularly in one such as this, which will allow people with disabilities to participate, compete and succeed in football. We have worked with Thorpe United for a number of years now and are looking forward to continuing this relationship with the club through this new venture.’

Sessions are initially free of charge to players.
