| North Duffield U7 0 - 2 Thorpe United U7 (Blue) Thorpe travelled to North Duffield to complete this back to back fixture, last years spectacle had brought an entertaining draw, so a tough game was expected, as they were greeted by near perfect conditions. Thorpe started the brightest and soon had the Dragons on the back foot as they pushed for the opening goal, chance after chance came their way but good keeping and defensive blocking halted any progress. A rare Duffield attack brought keeper George Broadhurst into the action smartly clearing the danger as it looked like they were in on goal. As half time approached a quick corner found the defensive architect David Walters, whose drive shaved the post, with the keeper beaten. The blue troops marched out for the second half believing the game was theirs for the taking. With Walters sweeping up any clearances, the midfield pairing of Zoe Belding and Lucas Matthewman upped the anti and went in search of the goal they so much wanted, and as Sam Pheonix began to become a constant menace up front, Duffield were been forced further and further back. As the game entered the final quarter a Matthewman pass was picked up by “Player of the Match” Belding, with the whole of the home defence swarming round her she rode challenge after challenge down the right before her cross come shot somehow beat the keeper and broke the deadlock. Thorpe were not going to let this lead slip and defended with their lives, Pheonix intercepted a pass and headed for goal. As he pounded into the area he was felled by two defenders to earn his team a penalty. The Dragons were finally slayed as Matthewman thumped the ball into the net past the keeper whose valiant effort couldn’t stop the ball from crossing the line and capping a fine performance from the blues. Thorpe United U7 (Blue) 0 - 0 North Duffield Dragons After Thorpe’s first game heroics, they set out to stretch their unbeaten run to eight games. The fantastic five were joined by Matthewman between the sticks, and set off as though they meant business. From the start Aaron Kelsey marauded forward and created the games first chance, only a last ditch block kept the Duffield goal in tact. The Dragons then began to gain the upper hand and came close to scoring, but a quality Matthewman save low to his right, thwarted the first goal. As the home team pushed forward the central trio of Zachary Buttle, Lewis Binns and Kelsey dug in their heels grafting like Trojans, with the help of the ever impressive Carter Sellars they began to look comfortable at the back as half time approached. The final period served up another entertaining display with both teams battling for the win. Thorpe had the better of the opening exchanges and Lucas Adshead came close on several occasions, but was unable to grab a goal. North Duffield though finished the game strongest and if not for “Man of the Match” Buttle filling in along side Sellars, they could have stole the win, as they forced countless goalmouth scrambles. As the game came to its conclusion, three top drawer saves from Matthewman helped earn the draw. His third, a full length leap across his goal to push the ball for a corner, was stunning. A fine nil-nil draw to round off a great blue team performance, and a fantastic start to the New Year. |

| Thorpe United U7 (Blue) 10 - 0 Phoenix U7 As severe winds hit the country Thorpe whipped up their own storm and put ten past Phoenix in this derby game, as right from the off the home side commanded the field and doused the Phoenix flames, unsettling their opponents with quick passing and hard tackling. With only minutes gone it was Thorpe’s own Phoenix, Sam, who was wrestled to the ground inside the area for a penalty kick. The spot kick was duly riffled home by Lucas Matthewman and they began to settle into their stride with some managerial fine tuning. Zoe Belding expertly sent Phoenix through and he despatched the games second goal, and then became provider as his shot struck a post and Belding forced home the re-bound. As the break approached Phoenix grabbed two more goals to complete his hat-trick with neat finishes, before a Matthewman long range effort beat the keeper low to his left. The second period had only just started when a fine David Walters run out of his area ended with a sublime pass, releasing Phoenix, who finished with class. Belding grabbed her second after another Walters run and neat interplay with Matthewman created an opportunity; she calmly tucked the ball past the keeper. Belding and Matthewman then made way for Aaron Kelsey and Carter Sellars to have a deserved first game outing. Sellars quickly settled in at the back allowing Walters to push forward, but it was a forceful run from Kelsey that ended in the ball striking the post, Phoenix picked up the lose ball and curled the ball into the top corner with consummate ease. As full time approached keeper, George Broadhurst, who never touched the ball watched as Phoenix capped his “Man of the Match” award, as he completed his double hat-trick to complete another good win for the Blues. Thorpe United U7’s (Blue) 5 - 0 Phoenix The friendly game had seen Thorpe beaten only once this term and they set off at great pace, the opposition soon got back into the game though and began to enjoy some good possession, as Thorpe unusually began to lose their positions and get a little gung ho. It was the ever dependable Sellars who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, setting off on one of his full length dashes and unleashing a shot which somehow managed to creep under the keeper to open the scoring. This lifted the Blues and they finally got out of first gear. Kelsey’s lengthy surge and quality cross forced an own goal, as Broadhurst and Lucas Adshead applied the pressure inside the area. Zachary Buttle then came to life as Phoenix began to get back into the game, breaking up play with his endless tackles in mid field as the half time whistle sounded. The second half was quite an even affair with Phoenix just unable to break the Thorpe backline and the home side taking their chances as they came. Belding on for Broadhurst, ended a good run with a fine finish low into the bottom corner, before Adsheads 50/50 with the Phoenix keeper ended in him forcing home his first. His second soon followed as he tapped in a Belding cross at the back post to end the games scoring. Another fine display from the second string. |
