| Thorpe United Tournament - U8s Cup Final Runners Up Thorpe United under 8s went so close to ending their season with more silverware last weekend, as they emerged runners up in the annual Thorpe United football gala. Making a dream start against local rivals Brayton Wanderers, Thorpe cruised to a 3-1 victory with well taken goals from the attack-minded trio of Nathan Adamson, Reece Whiteley and Luke Shipley. It could have been more had it not been for the Brayton keeper who made an excellent save from Bobby Clayton whose side footed strike finished off a fine flowing Thorpe move. Thorpe faced Ulleskelf JFC in the second fixture, and buoyed from the opening match played some excellent football creating a wealth of chances to work the Ulleskelf keeper hard. Eventually Thorpe’s persistence was rewarded, when Adamson converted to leave Thorpe sitting pretty at the top of the group with a six point return after two games. The third fixture was always going to test Thorpe, facing the league champions Howden Town (B) who entered two teams for this tournament. The strength of Howden’s squad was clear, with Thorpe’s rearguard of Logan Backhouse and Daniel Betteridge working overtime to keep the opposition attack at bay. Ben Guest pulled off some fine first half saves before unloading a huge goal kick which sent Adamson through to smash home and give Thorpe the advantage, but Howden finished strongly and claimed an equaliser late on to end the game at 1-1. Seven points from three games saw Thorpe top the group, to earn a semi final place against Snaith. With thoughts of the previous week’s defeat at the Snaith tournament still fresh in the mind, Thorpe were geared up for this and it showed as they pressurised from the kick off with some resolute tackling. The break through came mid way though the first half with Adamson shrugging off three challenges to end a determined run with a remarkable finish from a tight angle. The second half was well contested, but Thorpe ended Snaith’s hopes and made sure of the victory when goal machine Adamson capitalised on a goal keeper error to smash home from close range. Onto the final and flying high, Thorpe were in fine form as they faced a strong Howden Town A team. There was no evidence of the gulf that separated these teams in the Selby JFC league table, with both teams battling hard to get their hands on the trophy. Adamson looked menacing at one end, and Guest was in fine form at the other pulling off some vital saves, but was helpless to stop an excellent finish which gave Howden the lead on the stroke of half time. The second half was evenly balanced, with chances at a premium and Thorpe were inches away from an equaliser when Adamson’s angled drive brushed the top of the cross bar. Adam Ridley went close in the dying seconds after intense Thorpe pressure, but time ran out for the hosts and Howden held on to the final whistle to take the game and the trophy. This was Thorpe United under 8s last action of the season, but we are looking for new additions to the squad for the 2008/9 (under 9s) season. If your child is aged 8 on August 31st, and is interested in attending a training session, please contact U8s manager Mike Bainbridge on 07729 994649 for more information. Training will commence from mid-July. |

| Ulleskelf Tournament - U8s Plate Competition Winners! Thorpe United under 8s enjoyed their first taste of tournament success this weekend, emerging victorious in the Plate competition at the Ulleskelf JFC Annual Gala. Drawn in a tough group, Thorpe made the dream start, beating high flying Tadcaster Albion 2-0 courtesy of a fine brace from Reece Whiteley, with some heroic shot stopping from Ben Guest. However, Thorpe soon dropped back to earth with successive 2-0 defeats to Garforth Villa and Kippax Athletic Red. The quality of these teams shone through and the score lines could have been much worse had it not been for some strong defensive work from Daniel Betteridge, Alex Herridge and Adam Ridley. Thorpe showed character as they lifted themselves for the final game of the group stage, to record an emphatic 3-0 victory against the hosts, with goals from Nathan Adamson and a fine double from Luke Shipley. Six points from two games was only enough for fourth in the tight group, which saw Thorpe move into the Plate Competition for a semi final match against Kippax Athletic Blue. Buoyed from the previous result, Thorpe played with confidence and took a two goal lead courtesy of fine efforts from Whiteley and Adamson. Logan Backhouse was solid in defence, providing a solid foundation from which Thorpe launched wave upon wave of attacks, however, a freak Kippax goal from a late corner set up for a nervy finish, but Thorpe held firm to secure a place in the final against local rivals Brayton Wanderers. It was a fitting end that these teams would meet to contest the Plate, and both teams did not disappoint as they served up an exciting finale to a great day’s football. It could have gone either way, with a nervy first half ending goal-less, but the deadlock was finally broken when Adamson powered his way through the Brayton defence to slot home coolly into the far corner. It was a finish worthy of winning any cup final, and Brayton had no answer as Thorpe held on to the final whistle to secure their first piece of silverware. |
