| Mitchell League Cup Quarter-Final North Duffield U12 4 - 2 Thorpe United U12 Following on from last weeks poor performance against Rawcliffe, Thorpe knew they had to up their game against a tough North Duffield side and they certainly didn’t disappoint. As the wind picked up both sides struggled to get the ball down and with chances few and far between it looked odds on for a penalty class until the midfield joint “man of the match” pairing of Anderson and Cussans began to get a grip of the game. Thorpe grabbed the lead as Wynn’s intelligent pass found Wilson who slotted the ball neatly into the path of Cussans to fire home. Thorpe were slowly finding their feet and good link up play also saw Wilson and Wright go close as the first half drew to a close. With nothing to lose, Duffield came out fighting in the second half only to find the back four of Redgrave, O’Farrell, Connell and Howcroft hold firm, with the only clear chance going to Allen, whose blistering strike brought a stunning save from Swash. Moments later Swash saved on the line following a Wickham shot and Wilson cleared from a corner before running up the other end to receive a Leybourn cross, pass two defenders and then roll the ball across the goal to an eagerly awaiting Littlewood who could not miss. In an almost repeat passage of play, Thorpe made the game safe as Anderson rounded the left back to cross for Copley to volley home. Clayton came close to add his name to the score card as good link up play with Leybourn left him clear to fire a volley which was well matched by the home keeper. As the final whistle blew it was Thorpe who took the honours in this long awaited local derby between the two Selby District teams playing in the York leagues and with it a passage through to the last four of the League Cup. |
| Barkston Ash Cup Quarter-Final Thorpe United U12 5 - 0 Garforth Villa U12 Thorpe kept their Barkston Ash Cup run going with a comfortable win against a spirited Garforth team from the Selby League. Wilson opened the scoring with a fine finish after a stunning through ball from Wynn. With the wind behind them, Garforth tried to press for much of the first half but couldn’t break the defensive wall of O’Farell, Connell, Redgrave and Howcroft who worked hard to protect keeper Swash. Thorpe stretched their lead in the second half as Copley nicked through on goal and ended with a neat finish. Littlewood added his name to the score sheet following good work from Leybourn on the left, before Clayton added two, the first from a rebound of Redgrave’s long range shot and the second from close range as Garforth failed to clear their lines from a corner. Clayton could have bagged the first hat trick for the season as his well earned penalty kick bounced back of the bar but that could not spoil an excellent team performance in a came that joint Man of the Match winner Wynn and Anderson controlled from start to finish. |
