York FA Cup Final
Poppleton U16   3  -  1   Thorpe United U16
Having waited just over a week to lock horns once more with Poppleton this time in the York F A Final the lads from Field Lane had an eye on revenge.  The team was reshaped as selection was once more very hard with the mid-week game at Tadcaster pushing yet more players into contention for the starting line up.

As the game started Thorpe forged the first real chance of a tense affair as Butcher, Summers and Ashley Wragg combined well to play in Chapman who off balance could only stab wide from 10 yards.  Both sides were proving difficult to break down as the half hour mark approached but that was about to change.  The deadlock was broken when Poppy’s forward found a yard of space as he turned in the box before spinning to find the bottom corner beyond the helpless Calvert.  From the restart Butcher almost equalised instantly as a Lofthouse pass allowed him to outpace the defence and the keeper only to see his lob bounce off the crossbar and out to safety.  Minutes later Thorpe found themselves 2 – 0 as a long ball was poorly dealt with and fell kindly for Poppleton to edge further ahead.  Struggling to come to terms with conceding 2 goals in such a manner concentration was lacking as a Poppleton corner gave them the chance to take an amazing 3 – 0 lead in a mad 5 minute spell.

At the interval and a chance to regroup with Lancashire introduced as Thorpe had to gain a foot hold in a game that was slipping from their grasp.  The second period was a very different game as the midfield of Kitson, Lancashire , Ashley and Stephen Wragg began to dominate proceeding.  Full backs Ward and Cryer forged forward at every opportunity as Lofhouse, Baker and Keeper Calvert dealt well with the occasional Poppleton attacks.

As the pressure started to tell on the Poppy defence Butcher rose well to bury a Wragg corner to breathe life into his sides attempted escape act.  Early in the second half a second Thorpe goal looked like  it had arrived when Lofthouse forced another set piece home only to be ruled out for a push.  Lancashire was the next to threaten Poppy’s goal as his header was steered narrowly wide on the hour.  For all their hard effort Thorpe could not find another break through and eventually the final whistle sounded to leave the score 3 – 1.
Barkston Ash U16 Cup Final
Thorpe United U16   1  -  3
(AET) Garforth Rangers U16
The last ever game in junior football presented the lads from Thorpe with the final chance to claim some silverware from a season that had promised so much. On a blazing hot afternoon both sides served up a typically high energy game full of passion and skill.

Settling quickly Thorpe proved the more adventurous as they began to fashion chances with Lancashire, Lawler and Stephen and Ashley Wragg all impressing as they controlled affairs in an industrious midfield. The first real chance of note came after good play from Ward, Lofthouse and Lancashire released Butcher to race clear from his marker only to see his goal bound drive brilliantly saved by the Garforth keeper. The lively forward play of Summers and Butcher was a constant threat to a defence that lacked pace and relied heavily at times on a linesman’s flag to spare their blushes. At the other end Calvert was having a quieter time with the backline of Cryer, Baker, Ward and Lofthouse forming a solid cordon around his goal and on occasion setting his side back on the offensive with great distribution. On the half hour mark Garforth’s keeper once more proved his team’s hero as he saved bravely at the feet of Man of the match Ashley Wragg as he burst into the box after Butcher guided a header into his path. The pressure eventually told as from a succession of corners a goal bound Lofthouse header was helped home on the line by a grateful Butcher to give his side a well deserved 1-0 lead. As the interval approached Calvert made his first real save as he got his finger tips to save well to send his team in at the break with the narrowest of advantages.

As much as Thorpe had dominated the first period they were unable to put the nails in Garforth’s coffin and in the second half that was to prove costly. Adding the fresh legs of Chapman, Kitson, and Holden helped greatly but it was unable to wrestle the initiative from Garforth who grew in confidence after equalizing just 10 minutes into the second period. Clear chances were still a premium as Thorpe defended bravely and as time ran out Kitson had a great chance to win the tie only for the keeper to produce another wonder save. Extra time and two sets of exhausted players tried their best to deliver the fatal blow as the game swung from end to end, Hare was introduced to add his influence to the wing.  A Chapman cross from the right gave Butcher a great opportunity to squeeze back into the lead but his lob drifted agonisingly onto the roof of the net. Moments later Garforth took the lead, as through a crowded box a goal bound shot eluded everyone to find the bottom corner and leave Thorpe with only 10 minutes to recover. In throwing everything at their opponents to rescue the situation the lads from Field Lane had to gamble but for all their efforts the final act of an outstanding fixture was an unstoppable 25 yard free-kick that crashed into the top corner to leave the final score 3 -1 . Having played so well in all three cup finals and not won any is a massive disappointment to all concern with the team but it is hoped that their journey through junior football has been an experience that they will all remember fondly.
York U16 League Division 1
Tadcaster Albion U16   1  -  2   Thorpe United U16
This last remaining league game was fittingly played on Tadcaster’s main pitch with the hosts helping to mark the occasion by putting on  well appreciated food after the match. The match itself had little but pride riding on it, by way of result but neither side wanted to lose and this was very evident as early challenges suggested that the game was going to be a little tasty.

The contest was only minutes old when Summer’s received a bad knock in a careless tackle which ended his game and may well keep him from the 2 remaining Cup Finals of the season. Holding their own in a reshaped team, full-backs Lawler and Stephen Wragg with wingers Chapman and Hare made good use of the large surface as their composer and passing gave Thorpe the best of starts. At the back a very confident rear guard of Kitson,, Baker and Lofthouse were showing a strong Tadcaster strike partnership that they were in no mood to allow them freedom as they time and again won the ball before setting their team forward again. The first period was dominated by swift passing and good movement with Lancashire, Ashley Wragg and lone striker Butcher instrumental in all that was good about a very accomplished first half. A brave Chapman was halted as he drove into the box by the home keeper only for the resulting penalty to go unpunished to leave the scores level at the break. Shortly after the restart, Butcher showed great persistence when he rammed home at the second attempt to give his side a deserved lead. The advantage was doubled soon after as from a Stephen Wragg corner Butchers header was finished in style by Baker as he span on the six yard line to crash home for 2-0. At this point Thorpe were playing some lovely football with man of the match Chapman terrorising his opposite number with his pace and directness. Adding Ward gave the side a lift as energy levels started to dip but neither he nor his keeper Calvert could do a lot about a wonder strike from distance that sailed in to give the appearance that the fixture was a close affair. At the final whistle Thorpe had the victory their play had deserved but it is hoped at not to higher cost as injuries at this crucial time of year can have a major say in the outcome of the up and coming York F.A. and Barkston Ash Junior Cup finals.
